Self inductance , or inductance is property of a coil due to which it opposes a change in current through it. A change in current produces an emf in the coil to oppose the change, which is the essential property of inductance.

Mutual inductance is the property by which a coil opposes a change in current in another neighbouring coil. If two coils are on same core, or even placed nearby, current in one coil creates a magnetic flux which also passes through the other. If current in one coil changes, the other coil will oppose a change in this flux through itself by creating opposing emf.

Mutual inductance can be defined as the proportionality factor, between change in emf generated one coil to change in current in the other coil which caused the change.
