To find the distance between two points we use the equation

 \sqrt{(x_2 - x_1) {}^{2}   + (y_2 - y_1) {}^{2} }

Putting the values:-

 \sqrt{( - 1 - ( - 5)   ) {}^{2} + (3 - 7) {}^{2} }

 =  \sqrt{( - 1 + 5) {}^{2}  + ( - 4) {}^{2} }

 =  \sqrt{(4) {}^{2} + ( - 4) {}^{2}  }

 =  \sqrt{16 + 16}

 = \sqrt{32}

 =  \sqrt{16 \times 2}

 =  \sqrt{16}  \times  \sqrt{2}

 = 4 \times  \sqrt{2}

 =4 \sqrt{2}

Hence, the distance between the points (-5,7) and (-1,3) is 4√2
