Let A (a,b) = ( x1 ,y1) and B ( x2,y2) be the points of a straight line

AB =

 \sqrt{(x2 -  x1} ) {}^{2}  +( y2 - y1) {}^{2}

AB =

 \sqrt{ (- a - a) {}^{2} } + ( - b - b) {}^{2}

 =  \sqrt{( -2 a) {}^{2} }  + ( - 2b) {}^{2}

 =  \sqrt{4a {}^{2} }  + 4b {}^{2}  = 2 \sqrt{a } { }^{2}  + b {}^{2} units

Answer =

2 \sqrt{a}  {}^{2}  + b {}^{2} units
