Lets say I told you that there's a number x when divided by 3 gives remainder 2.

So the divisor is 3, and remainder is 2. The quotient is still missing though. But we need the general formula. If x was perfectly divisible by 3 then remainder would be 0, or x could be written as 3*q where q is some number, called the quotient. When there's a non zero remainder involved, then it's simply added to 3*q making it 3*q + 2, in case of remainder 2.

So x = d*q + r, where x, d, q, r are dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder respectively.
