Question:

find the empirical formula and molecular formula of a compound having the following data is carbon=75.95•/• hydrogen =6.32% and nitrogen equal to 17.76% the vapour density of the compound is 39.5

Right answer ( ̄︶ ̄)↗

1. Find the ratio between the composition of the element with the molar mass of the element

Ratio for carbon: 75.95/12 = 6.32 (approx)

Ratio for hydrogen: 6.32/1 = 6.32

Ratio of nitrogen: 17.76 = 1.26 (approx)

Now, take the ratio of these compositions now,

6.32 : 6.32 : 1.26

5 : 5 : 1

So, empirical formula is C₅H₅N

Molecular mass of the compound = vapour pressure x 2

39.5 x 2 = 79

Now, mass of empirical formula = (12 x 5) + 5 + (1 x 14) = 79

n = \frac{Molecular \:\: mass}{Empirical\:\: formula\:\: mass} = 79/79 = 1

So, your answer is C₅H₅N also known as pyridine
