SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

The equation of straight line passing through the point (-4,5) and making equal intercepts on the coordinate axis.

EVALUATION

The equation of the line which makes equal intercepts on the coordinate axis is

 \displaystyle \sf{} \frac{x}{a} + \frac{y}{a} = 1

On simplification we get

 \implies \sf{}x + y = a \: \: \: ....(1)

Now the equation (1) passes through the point (-4,5)

So we get from Equation (1)

 \sf{} - 4 + 5 = a

 \implies \sf{}a = 1

From Equation (1) we get by putting the value of a

 \sf{}x + y = 1

FINAL ANSWER

Hence the required equation of the line is

 \sf{}x + y = 1
