(f-g)(x) simply means f(x)-g(x).

So in this case, you subtract the functions.

(f * g)(x)=f(x) * g(x).

So this time you are multiplying the functions

and finally, (f/g)(x)=f(x)/g(x). Now you are dividing the functions.
