find the first term if a5-a3= 4

Hi Mate!!!

a5 = a + 4d and a3 = a + 2d

where a is ist term and d is common difference

a4 = a + 3 d = 4 equation 1

=> a5 - a3 = a + 4d - a - 2d = 4

=> 2d = 4

=> d = 2

Now, put value of d in equation 6

4 = a + 6

a = -2

So, ist term of A.p is -2

Anonymous: Ok..... a5 - a3 = a4 ..... =. a + 4d - a - 2d = a + 3d...........= 2d = a + 3d. where d = 2 a + 3( 2 ) = 2(2)..... a + 6 = 4
