Given: Two rational numbers-  \frac{1}{3} and \frac{1}{6}

To find: A rational numbers between the given numbers

Solution:

The given rational numbers have different denominators. First we need to make their denominators same.

LCM of their denominators 3 and 6 = 6

To convert the rational numbers with same denominators, we have

\frac{1}{3} =  \frac{1}{3} × \frac{2}{2} = \frac{2}{6} and \frac{1}{6} = \frac{1}{6} × \frac{1}{1} = \frac{1}{6}

To insert a rational number, we need to multiply both numerator and denominator of each rational number by 1 + 1 i.e., 2.

We get  \frac{1}{6} = \frac{1}{6} × \frac{2}{2} = \frac{2}{12} and \frac{2}{6} =  \frac{2}{6} × \frac{2}{2} = \frac{4}{ 12}

We see that 3 is an integer between 2 and 4.

i.e.,  \frac{2}{12} < \frac{3}{12} < \frac{4}{12}

Hence, a fraction between  \frac{1}{3} \ and \ \frac{1}{6}  is: \frac{3}{12} or \frac{1}{4}
