The smallest 6 digit number is 100000. We find the square root of 100000 with a calculator: = 316.227766. 

The greatest six digit number  = 999,999
we know that 10002 = 1,000,000 which is only 1 more than 999,999
 so  the greatest six digit number which is perfect square = (1000 -1)2
 = ( 999)2 
 = 998,001

Also by long division method we can get that,
It is between the square of 316 and 317.

So smallest 6digit perfect square is of 317² = 100489.

And greatest 6 digit number is 999999.
It is between square of 999 and 1000.

So greatest 6 digit perfect square is 998001 = 999².
