The square of any 3-digit number is either a 5 digit or a 6 digit number.

Eg- 100*100= 10000 (5 digit)

999*999= 998001 (6 digit)

Hence, the largest 4 digit perfect square shall be the square of the largest 2 digit number i.e. 99.

Hence, 99*99= 9801.

Therefore, the answer is 9801.
