The answer is 6.

GIVEN

A number divides 338 and 59 and leaves remainders of 2 and 5 respectively.

TO FIND

The greatest number.

SOLUTION

The above problem can be simply solved as follows;

It is given that,

338 divided by a nunber leaves remainder 2

59 divided by a number leaves remainder 5

NOW,

The number will leave no remainder if divides by 338-2 = 336

Similarly,

The number will leave no remainder if it divides by 59 - 5 = 54

Finding the HCF of 336 and 54

336 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 7

54 = 2 × 3 × 3 × 3

HCF = 2 × 3 = 6

Hence, The answer is 6.
