Concept:

HCF stands for Highest Common Factor. HCF of  a given set of numbers is a largest no. which can divide the given set of numbers

LCM stands for Lowest Common Multiple. LCM of a given set of a number is a smallest number which is divisible by the given set of numbers

Multiplication of two numbers = hCF x LCM

Given:

42,90,82so as to leave remainder 2 in each case

Find:

Find the greatest number that will divide 42,90,82so as to leave remainder 2 in each case

Solution:

In order to make 42, 90 and 82 completely divisible by the greatest number, we need to subtract 2 from each term, so

42-2 = 40, 90-2 = 88 and 82-2 = 80

Now HCF of  40,88,80 is

40=2x2x2x5

80 = 2×2×2×2×5

88 = 2×2×2×11

Hence HCF of  i40,88,80 is=8

Hence the greatest number that will divide 42, 90 and 82 leaving the remainder 2 in each case is 8

So the correct answer is 8.
