prime factors of 196 = 2 x 2 x 7 x 7

                                 =  2 square x 7 square

prime factors of 352 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 11

                                   = 2 power 5 x 11

 so hcf is  the common number having least power

here 2 is common  

2 power 2 is less than 2 power 5

so hcf = 2 power 2

          = 2^2

            = 4
