one thing I would like to add to above process. the process of long division method is based on following rules.

1. any two integers a and b can be written in the form

a = bq + r where q and r are integers and 0<r<a

q is called quotient and r is called remainder.

2. the HCF of a and b will also be the HCF of a and r.

the rules at 2 above is used repeatedly to create long division method to find HCF. At each next step we continue to find HCF of divisor and remainder. and when we find one (when remainder divides divisor) that HCF is also the HCF of the given numbers.

this info can be used to solve problems like

when a number is divided by 144, 108 is remainder. find the HCF of 144 and the given number.

Ans. the HCF of 144 and the number will be same as HCF of 144 and remainder 108 which is 36 (I guess)

hope you got enlightened xD
