Effective acceleration due to gravity at a height h above the ground is given by,

g' = g ( R/R+h)²

R is the radius of the earth, and is equal to 6400km.

To find the height at which the value of g reduces to g/2

g/2 = g ( R/R+h)²

1/2 = ( R/R+h)²

1/√2 = R/R+h

R + h = √2 R

h = R ( √2 - 1)

Therefore, At a height ( √2 - 1) R, The value of g reduces to g/2.
