So its side 'a' can be calculated first

a^2 = 3^2 + (a/2)^2

=> a^2 = 9 + a^2/4

=> 3a^2 /4 = 9

=> a^2 = 36/3 = 12

=> a = √12 = 2 √3 cm

=> area of triangle = 1/2 * 2 √3 * 3

= 3 √3 cm^2 OR 5.196 cm^2 ( approx)
