The Betul district is located in Madhya Pradesh India and has a significant role in the history of the subcontinent. It had been predominantly Marathan region, where the Marathan Kings had ruled for centuries. (Marathas were a great resistance against the Mughal and British rule in India)
However, in order to pay the debt of the East India Company in 1818, the ruler decided to give away the land to the British. They ruled that region till 1906, after the population dropped due to famine in 1896-1897. The administrative organs were shifted to Badnur(3 miles away from Betul).
Even though the Marathas had dominance in the region, the land was used to cease the Marathan uprising against the British Raj. In 1862, British troops were settled in the region to counter the troops of Appa Sahib, a Marathan fighter.
