36 = 2 \times 2 \times 3 \times 3 =  {2}^{2}  \times  {3}^{2}  \\  \\ 48 = 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 3 =  {2}^{4}  \times 3 \\  \\ for \: lcm  \: highest \: power \: of \: each \: factor  \\ is \: multiplied \\ lcm=  {2}^{4}  \times  {3}^{2}  = 16 \times 9 = 144 \\  \\ for \: hcf  \: lowest \:  power \: of \: only \\  \: common \: factors \: is \: multiplied \\ hcf =  {2}^{2}  \times 3 = 12
