The length of the largest rod that can be put in the room will be the length of the diagonal from one vertex to the opposite vertex or the body diagonal

Length of the diagonal =

 \sqrt{ {l}^{2}  +  {b}^{2} +  {h}^{2}  }  \\  =  \sqrt{ {12}^{2} +  {9}^{2}  +  {8}^{2}  }  =  \sqrt{144 + 81 + 64}  \\  =  \sqrt{289}  = 17m
