Consider the rectangle ABCD with a diagonal AC
By using pythagoras theorem
(AC)² = (AB)² + (BC)²
(AC)² = 12² + 5² = 144 + 25 = 169 = `13²
AC = 13cm

The sides of rectangle makes 90° with each other.
So applying Pythagoras theorem,
diagonal, d = √[(12)²+(5)²]
                  =√(144+25) =√169
                  = 13 cm
