We have been given that velocity is 0.99c. Since this velocity is a relativistic velocity, so we use relativistic expression for the calculation of mass.

We know, that the relativistic mass expression is given by

m=mo/√[1/(v²/c²)], where

m = relativistic mass

mo(pronounced as m 'not')= rest mass

v= velocity of a particle

c=speed of light

Answer: The mass of electron whose velocity is 0.99c is 6.45 x 10⁻³⁰ kg.

Explanation:

It is given in the question that we have to find the mass of electron whose velocity is 0.99 c
v = 0.99 c

rest mass of electron = m₀

m = m₀ /√1 - v²/c²

m = m₀ /√1 - (0.99c)²/c²

m = m₀ / √1 - 0.9801

m = m₀ / 0.1411

m = 7.09m₀

m = 7.09 x 9.109×10⁻³¹  kg

m = 6.45 x 10⁻³⁰ kg

More facts on electron rest mass:

  • The electron mass, also referred to as the invariant mass of the electron, is the weight of a stationary electron. One of physics' fundamental constants is it.
  • Its mass is approximately 9.109×10⁻³¹  kg, or 5.486×10⁻⁴ daltons, with an energy-equivalent of around 8.187×10⁻¹⁴J, or 0.511 MeV.
