Cumulative number of students- distribution

Marks. Number
0 - 10........ 4
10 - 20. ...... 14 = 4+10
20 - 30 ...... 26 = 14+12
30 - 40 ..... 35 = 26+9
40 - 50. ...... 40 = 35+5

Total number of students is 40. 50% of students means 20..

We see that cumulative number of students = 20, falls in the class of marks: 20 - 30... As 20 > 14 and 20 < 26.

Median is the midpoint of this class of marks. ie., (20+30)/2 = 25.

Median = 25.
