median term( middle term) is 10 and 22
so,

median=10+22/2=32/2=16

16 is the median

Hi there!

What is Median?

After arranging the given data in the ascending or descending order of magnitude, the value of the middle most observation, is called the median of the data.

Formula to find the median :)

Method : Arrange the data in increasing or decreasing order of magnitude. Let the total number of observation be n.

(i) If n is odd, then median

⇒ Value of \mathsf{( \frac{n + 1}{2} )\th} observation.

(ii) If n is even, then median

⇒ mean of \mathsf{( \frac{n}{2} )\th} and \mathsf{( \frac{n}{2} + 1 )\th} observations.

Coming to the question :

Given : 17, 19, 32, 10, 22, 21, 9, 35.

Arranging the data in an ascending order, we have ;

9, 10, 17, 19 , 21, 22, 32, 35

Here, n = 8, which is an even number.

We know that

If n is even, then median

⇒ mean of \mathsf{( \frac{n}{2} )\th} and \mathsf{( \frac{n}{2} + 1 )\th} term.

⇒ mean of \mathsf{( \frac{8}{2} )\th} and \mathsf{( \frac{8}{2} + 1 )\th} term.

⇒average of 4th and 5th terms.
 ⇒ \mathsf {\frac{1}{2} (19 + 21)} \\  \\ ⇒ \mathsf {\frac{1}{ \cancel{ \: 2 }}  \times  \cancel{40} \:  {}^{20} } \\  \\ ⇒ \mathsf {20}

Hence, the median of the data is 20.
