if number of observations is odd the median is n+1/2

If number of observations is even average of n/ 2 and n÷2 + 1

here n = 10 = even

so median is average of 10/ 2 and 10÷2 +1

average of 5th and 6th observation is median 8 + 9 / 2 = 8.5 is median
