Given equation :

2x² + 9x - 12 = 0

To find :

Nature of roots of the equation

Solution :

Inorder to find the nature of roots of the given equation, we must find the value of its discriminant. Discriminant helps us to find the nature of roots.

To find discriminant, we have a formula :-

→ D = b² - 4ac

Here :-

  • D = discriminant
  • b = coefficient of x
  • a = coefficient of x²
  • c = constant term

→ D = (9)² - 4(2) (-12)

→ D = 81 + 96

→ D = 177

Here, we can see that value of discriminant is positive, whenever the value of discriminant is +ve, this implies that the given equation has two distinct real roots.

∴ The given equation has two distinct real roots.

More :-

  • D < 0 implies that the given equation has no real roots, or has imaginary roots.

  • D = 0 implies that the given equation has two equal real roots.
