Given :-

5, 2, -1, -4 are in AP

To Find :-

The next term of the AP

Solution :-

First term of the AP a = 5

Common difference = 2-5 = -3 | -1 - 2 = -3

Therefore, d = -3

For the given set of AP, number of terms n = 4

=> we have to find the 5th term.

We know that,

To find the nth term of the AP,

nth term {\sf{S_n\: =\: a\: +\: nd}}

On inserting the values in the formula

We get ,

{\sf{S_5\: =\: 5\: +\: 5\: \times\: (-3)}}

{\sf{S_5\: =\: 5\: +\: (-15)}}

{\sf{S_5\: =\: 5\: -\:15}}

{\sf{S_5\: =\: -10}}

Therefore, 5th term of the AP is -10
