Let the number be x.

One third of the number = x/3
twice the number = 2x

according to question
x/3 = 2x + 4
⇒ x/3 - 2x = 4
⇒ (x - 6x)/3 = 4
⇒ -5x/3 = 4
⇒ x = -(4×3)/5
⇒ x = -12/5

So the number is -12/5
