Let the number be x

Therefore according to the question

84 \% \:  \:    of \:  \:  x = 42

=> 84\% \times x = 42

 =  >  \frac{84}{100 }  \times x = 42

 =  > x = 42 \times  \frac{100}{84}

 =  > x =  \frac{100}{2}

 =  > x = 50

∴ The number is 50
