Let the original number be X and the correct result by Y.

As per the condition used on the problem statement, we can make two equations:
1) 5X = Y + 12
2) 3X = Y

Subtracting the 2nd equation from the 1st one, we get the value of X = 6.

So our answer is 6

toptek: I am not sure if you are looking at the answer given in the book, but just try to see the relation. I got the answer as 6. Lets check back. Multiply 6 by 5, you get 30. Multiply 6 by 3, you get 18. The difference between 18 and 30 is 12. Hence all conditions are being satisfied. Lets say if the answer was 9; 9 x 5 = 45 and 9 x 3 = 27. The difference between 45 and 27 is 18 and it does not satisfy the condition given in the problem statement.
