let the altitude is x
therefore base = x +7
we know in right angle triangle ,
by Pythagoras theorum
hypotenuse ^2 = base ^2 + altitude ^2
13 ^2 = x^2 + ( x+7)^2
169 = x^2 + x^2 +14x + 49
2x^2 + 14x + 49 - 169 = 0
2x^2 + 14x - 120 = 0
x^2 + 7x - 60 = 0
x^2 + 12x - 5x - 60 = 0
x ( x + 12 ) -5 ( x+12) = 0
( x + 12 ) (x -5) =0
( x + 12 ) =0 or (x -5) =0
x = -12 or x =5
side never negative
therefore , altitude =5 cm
base = 5+7 = 12 cm
therefore base = x +7
we know in right angle triangle ,
by Pythagoras theorum
hypotenuse ^2 = base ^2 + altitude ^2
13 ^2 = x^2 + ( x+7)^2
169 = x^2 + x^2 +14x + 49

2x^2 + 14x - 120 = 0
x^2 + 7x - 60 = 0
x^2 + 12x - 5x - 60 = 0
x ( x + 12 ) -5 ( x+12) = 0
( x + 12 ) (x -5) =0
( x + 12 ) =0 or (x -5) =0
x = -12 or x =5
side never negative
therefore , altitude =5 cm
base = 5+7 = 12 cm
