The oxidation of Cr in Cr(OH)₄⁻¹ is +3

GIVEN

Chromium Hydroxide ion Cr(OH)₄⁻¹

TO FIND

The oxidation number of chromium in chromium hydroxide ion.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows

The oxidation number is the value assigned to an atom or compound of an ion that represents its oxidation state in a compound.

We know that,

The sum of oxidation of elements in an ion = Net charge on the ion.

Let, the oxidation number of Chromium be, x

The oxidation number of Oxygen atoms = -2

Oxidation number kr Hydrogen atom = +1.

So,

x + 4(-2+1) = -1

x - 4 = -1

x = -1+4 = 3

Hence, The oxidation of Cr in Cr(OH)₄⁻¹ is +3
