Given compound:HCO3

Let the oxidation state of carbon be x

we know that

Oxidation state of Hydrogen is +1

Oxidation state of Oxygen is -2

also sum of oxidation states in a compound is 0(zero)

therefore sum of oxidation states:

+1+x+(-2) 3=0

because there is 1 hydrogen,1 carbon, 3 oxygens so

+1+x+(-2) 3=0

+1+x+(-6) =0

+1+x-6=0

+1-6+x=0

-5+x=0

x=+5.

THEREFORE OXIDATION STATE OF CARBON IS '+5'.

I hope you are satisfied by my answer.
