Find the oxidation states of Fe in these compounds.
FeCl2
FeCl3
I know the answer is +2 &+3
But how the answer get +2 and +3 any one explain me plz​​

Explanation:

For FeCl2

There are two Cl atoms attached to an atom of iron (Fe).

To find out its Oxidation State look at the number of electrons it gained or lost.

Here iron shares its two electrons with two chlorine atoms so number is 2, As for sign(+), since it used when electrons are lost, So oxidation number for FeCl2 is +2.

Same goes for FeCl3, Since 3 electrons of iron are shared with three atoms of chlorine so oxidation state of Fe in FeCl3 is +3.

(-) sign is used when atom gains electron or electron.
