The molecular formula of sulphur dioxide is SO2.

Let us consider its mass individually,

Sulphur(S) it’s mass is 32

Oxygen(O) it’s mass is 16, but from its molecular formula we find there are two oxygen atoms hence it’s mass doubles

Hence it’s going to be 16*2=32

Therefore both are equal so we can directly estimate that it is the share of both, hence the total percentage is 100 so both contribute 50% ,thus this is one way of analysing and solving.

Another way of calculation goes so,

Percentage of the required element or atom ={mass of that Atom in total(check to multiply with the number of same atom present thus to obtain total mass of that particular atom)/total mass of the compound}*100

Percentage of oxygen=(32/64)*100=50%

I hope this was useful.

Thank you.
