Question : Find the perimeter of a rectangle if it's diagonal measure is 13 cm and its length is 12 cm.

Given:-

Diagonal length = 13 cm

Length of the rectangle = 12 cm.

To find :-

Using Pythogorean Theorem to find out the breadth of the rectangle.

Formulas applied : Pythogorean theorem, Perimeter of a Rectangle

 {a}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  =  {c}^{2}

b^2 = 169 - 144

b = √25

b = 5 cm.

Breadth = 5 cm. Length = 12 cm.

Hence the perimeter = 2(l + b) = 2(12 + 5) = 2(17) = 34 cm.

Food for thought :-

  • We are using Pythogorean Theorem because the angles of the rectangle are 90 degrees and they form a right angled triangle with the diagonal.
