HOPe this would be helpfull.

If a point (5, 12) means 5 on x axis and 12 on y axis. So perpendicular from that point to y axis is on to the 12 and that point is (0, 12) if it was asked to obtain distance from x axis the point must be here (5, 0).

Let the point perpendicular to point A(5,12) at the Y axis be P(x,y).

Since, the point P is on y axis, x=0 and since the point P is perpendicular to point A, y=12.

Applying distance formula

ap =  \sqrt{(x2 - x1) {}^{2} + (y2 - y1) {}^{2}  }

ap =  \sqrt{(5 - 0) {}^{2} + (12 - 12) {}^{2}  }

ap =  \sqrt{(5) {}^{2} }

ap = 5 \: units

Therefore, the perpendicular distance of A(5,12) from the y axis is 5 units.
