As you may be knowing, the x-coordinate of a point (x,y) is its perpendicular distance from y-axis and similarly y-coordinate of a point (x,y) is its perpendicular distance from x-axis.

so, in your case,

x=3=perpendicular distance of point (3,5) from y-axis

and

y=5=perpendicular distance of point (3,5) from x-axis
