SOLUTION:

The point which trisect the line of joining the points A (2, - 3) and B (4, 5), will divide AB into the ratio 1 : 2.

So the coordinates of the required point be

( (2 × 2 + 4 × 1)/(1 + 2), (2 × (- 3) + 5 × 1)/(1 + 2) )

i.e., ( (4 + 4)/3, (- 6 + 5)/3 )

i.e., ( 8/3, - 1/3 )

Again, the point which trisect the line of joining the points A (2, - 3) and B (4, 5), will divide AB into the ratio 2 : 1.

So the coordinates of the required point be

( (2 × 1 + 4 × 2)/(2 + 1), (1 × (- 3) + 2 × 5)/(2 + 1) )

i.e., ( (2 + 8)/3, (- 3 + 10)/3 )

i.e., ( 10/3, 7/3 )

the coordinates of the required points of trisection are (8/3, - 1/3) and (10/3, 7/3).
