Given x + y = 40 ……. (1)  & x – y = 8 … (2) 

Adding 1 & 2 equations

2x = 48 ⇒ x = 24

y = 40 – 24 = 16 

∴Ratio of the numbers is 24 : 16 ⇒ 3:2.
