Find the ratio in which point P(– 1, y) lying on the line segment joining points

A(– 3, 10) and 5(6, – 8) divides it. Also find the value of y.​

Let the ratio be m:n

Then,m+nmx2+nx1=−1

⇒m+n6m+3n=−1

⇒6m−3n=−m−n

⇒7m=2n

⇒nm=72

⇒m:n=2:7

Now, m+nmy2+ny1=y

⇒2+72(−8)+7(10)=y

⇒−16+70=9y

⇒9y=54

⇒y=954=6
