Let the required ratio be x:1.Then,

By section formula;

 - 1 = \frac{( - 3)(k) + 6(1)}{k + 1} \\ \\ = > - 1(k + 1) = - 3k + 6 \\ = > - k - 1 = - 3k + 6 \\ = > - k + 3k = 6 + 1 \\ = > 2k = 7 \\ = > k = \frac{7}{2}

Hence, AB is divided by P in 7:2 ratio.

 = > y = \frac{7(10) - 8(2)}{7 + 2} \\ = > y = \frac{70 - 16}{9} \\ = > y = \frac{54}{9} \\ = > y = 6

Hence,

y = 6
