We know that, the co-ordinates of the points which divide internally  the line segment joining the points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) in the ratio m:n is

P(x,y)=(m+nmx2+nx1,m+nmy2+ny1)

Given two points A(4,6) and (−7−1)

Let the coordinate of the point at X-axis be (x,o)

Let the ratio be m:n

By section formula:

x=(m+nmx2+nx1),(m+nmy2+ny1)=yx=m+n−7m+4n,y=m+n−m+6n(x,y)=(x,0)⇒x=m+n−7+4n

and 0=m+n−
