let, the ratio in which the line segment joining A(1,-5) and B(-4,5) is divided by the x-axis m1:m2

let, A(1,-5) = (x1,y1) and

B(-4,5) = (x2,y2)

x-axis = (x,0)

Now,

Using internal section formula

y = m1y2 + m2y1

m1 + m2

or, 0 = m1×5 + m2×(-5)

m1 + m2

or, 0 = 5m1 -5m2

or, 5m2 = 5m1

or, 5/5 = m1/m2

so, m1/m2 = 1/1

hence

m1:m2 = 1:1
