If AB is the line segment and we divide the line segment AB externally at point C in the ratio a:b, then the ratio of AC:BC = a:b ( same as we used to get the ratio in internal division with only difference is that in external division, point C lies on extended line segment AB, while in internal division point C lies in between line segment AB.

If a is lesser than b, then point C lies on the side of A. IF b is lesser than a, then point C lies on side of B.
