Answer:
What is the ratio in which y-axis divides the line segment joining (-3, -4) and (1, -2)?
Online JEE classroom program by BYJU'S classes.
Suppose A(-3,-4) and B(1,-2).
Let AB be cut by y-axis at P in the ratio p:1. Since P lies on Y-axis, P can be taken as (0, k).
Applying section formula namely
{(mx2 +nx1)/(m+n) , (my2+ny1)/(m+n)} we have (0, k) = {(p-3)/(p+1), ,(-2p-4)/(p+1)}
Equating the x-coordinates we get
0 = (p-3)/(p+1) => p = 3
Hence y-axis cuts AB in the ratio 3:1
