Given:

Two quantities 40 cm and 1 meter.

To Find:

The ratio of the two quantities is?

Solution:

1. The ratio of two quantities a and b is calculated by using the formula (a/b). The ratio of a and b is denoted as a:b.

=> a:b simply implies a/b.

2. The given quantities are 40 centimeters and 1 meter. The units of the two quantities are different. Hence, we have to make the units similar.

=> The value of 1 meter is 100 cm,

=> The ratio of 40 cm and 1 meters is,

=> 40 cm / 1 meter,

=> 40 cm/ 100 cm, ( Units are same hence operation can be performed  ).

=> (20x2)/(20x5).

=> 2/5

3. 40 cm : 1 meter = 2:5

Therefore, the ratio of 40 cm and 1 meter is 2:5.
