A) 1 km = 1000 m

5 km= 5 x 1000 m = 5000m

= 5000:400 => 50:4

B) 1 hour = 60 minutes

2 hours = 2x60 = 120 minutes

= 120:160 = 12:16 = (12:16) ÷ 4

=> 3:4

Given:

A) 5 km to 400 m

B) 2 hours to 160 minutes

To find: The ratio.

Solution:

When the ratio of two given values is to be found, the units of the two values must be the same.

A)

Metre and kilometre are units that are used to measure distances. The relationship between the units metre and kilometre is given as follows.

1 km = 1000 m

So, 5 km can be written in metres as follows.

5 * 1000 = 5000 m

Now, the ratio can be written as follows.

\frac{5000}{400} = \frac{25}{2}

       = 25 : 2

B)

Hours and minutes are units that are used to measure time. The relationship between the units hours and minutes is given as follows.

1 hour = 60 minutes

So, 2 hours can be written in minutes as follows.

2*60 = 120

Now, the ratio can be written as follows.

\frac{120}{160} = \frac{3}{4}

      = 3:4

Therefore, the ratio of

A) 5 km to 400 m is 25:2.

B) 2 hours to 160 minutes is 3:4.
