\large\underline{\underline{\red{\sf Question:-}}}

Find the ratio of atoms by mass in a molecule of

(a) Carbon dioxide

(b) Benzene

\large\underline{\underline{\red{\sf Required\:Answer:-}}}

\underline{\sf \purple{Solution\:\:(a)}}

We know that carbon dioxide is made up of Carbon and Oxygen . So the mass of

  • Carbon is 12 g
  • Oxygen is 16g .

In a carbon dioxide molecule (\sf CO_2) , 2 molecules of Oxygen combine with one molecule of carbon to form carbon dioxide.

\underline{\tt{\pink{So,\: the\; ratio \;by\:mass;}}}

\sf\qquad = 12g : 2\times16g

\sf\qquad = 12g : 32g

\sf\qquad =\dfrac{1}{\cancel4}\bigg({ \cancel{12g }}\bigg):  \dfrac{1}{\cancel4}\bigg({ \cancel{32g }}\bigg)

\qquad\boxed{\red{\bf \longmapsto 3:8}}

\underline{\sf \purple{Solution\:\:(b)}}

We know that Benzene is made up of Carbon and Hydrogen . So the mass of

  • Carbon is 12 g
  • Hydrogen is 1g .

In a Benzene molecule (\sf C_6H_6) , 6 molecules of Hydrogen combine with six molecule of carbon to form Benzene.

\underline{\tt{\pink{So,\: the\; ratio \;by\:mass;}}}

\sf\qquad = 12g\times6 : 1g\times6

\sf\qquad = 72g : 6g

\sf\qquad =\dfrac{1}{\cancel6}\bigg({ \cancel{72g }}\bigg):  \dfrac{1}{\cancel6}\bigg({ \cancel{6g }}\bigg)

\qquad\boxed{\red{\bf \longmapsto 12:1}}
