Find the reading of the spring balance shown in the figure. The elevator is going up with an acceleration of G/10 the pulley and the string are light and the pulley is smooth.

spring balance will read 2 × tension in the spring

let's calculate the tension.

a = net acceleration of blocks

left:

T - 1.5(g + g/10) = 1.5 × a

3.0(g + g/10) - T = 3.0 × a

so, T - 1.5(11g/10) = 1.5(11g/10) - T/2

T/2 = 3(11g/10)

2T = 132g/10 = spring balance reading

or 132 N if g = 10m/s^2
